Recover Windows XP on Samsung NC10

A few weeks ago my virus software removed a .sys file because it was ‘infected’ with a virus. As a result my Windows XP didn’t boot anymore, even in safe mode. Since it was time for a fresh Windows XP install I tried to start the recovery cd using an USB CD-ROM player. Apparently the recovery cd wasn’t bootable. Luckily Samsung had another option; pressing F4 in the bios startup screen. This didn’t work either since I used Grub to choose between Windows XP and Ubuntu.

On this forum I found the solution; in Grub hit the ‘C’ key and type in the following commands:

  • root (hd0,0)
  • chainloader +1
  • boot

Now you should get a progress bar followed by the Samsung recovery interface.

  1. Thanks, I had the following problems while following the instructions:
root (hd0,0) returned no such partition
    ls returned (hd0) (hd0,6) (hd0,5) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)
root (hd0,1) returned (hd0,1) Filesystem is ntfs
Samsung recovery did the rest. But now the netbook is no longer boothing, it keeps showing again and again the initial screen of the boothing …
The only thing I can access now is the BIOS.
I woluld greatly appreciate any suggestion about how to procceed.

  2. Hi Jeremy,
I’ve never seen this problem so unfortunately I can’t help you. Maybe try to reinstall Ubuntu so a new bootloader will be installed, or otherwise ask the guys on the forum link in my post?
    Good luck!
